Originally thought to be a seizure, Alicea suffered the medical episode while waiting for her son to come out of a basketball game, according to a GoFundMe launched by Pierina Darquea.
“Unfortunately events took a turn for the worse after discovering a brain hemorrhage in the occipital lobe from which she would not recover,” Darquea writes.
“…on January 19, 2022, Erica Alicea, a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend will be taken off of life support. At the young age of 42, she will pass away with her family at her side.”
More than $30,000 had been raised in less than 24 hours for the family of Alicea, who is remembered as a devoted mother to her two children, Janae, 17, and Isaiah, 16.
“Erica was a light in anyone’s life she touched,” writes Darquea.
“Being a mother was one of the most important things to her and she was her children’s biggest fan. Whether attending a sporting event or watching a dance performance you could always count on Erica to be cheering from the crowd and one of the proudest parents in the room. She loved her family unconditionally and will live on in their hearts forever.”
Meanwhile, the Moore Township Baseball page shared condolences on social media, along with other ways to support the Alicea family.
“It is with a heavy heart that I notify everyone and let them know that one of our baseball players’ family has suffered a terrible loss this weekend,” the post says.
“Thank you for your time and thoughtfulness during this difficult time for the Alicea family.”
A memorial service for Alicea will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at the George G. Bensing Funeral Home in Bath.
“Those of us who have had the privilege of getting to know, love, and befriend Erica, understand how important taking care of her family was to her,” the fundraiser says.
“Any donation will be greatly appreciated and put towards accumulated medical bills, funeral costs, college funds and to help defer living expenses while they begin to heal from this tragedy.”
